Secrets in the Dark
Frustrated, Nancy looked around for another motorboat that she could use to follow Hastings. She couldn’t let him get away!
At the end of Memorial Wharf she saw a couple of boats tied up and a sign advertising rentals. She raced to the end of the wharf, where a young boy was working, busily securing a boat.
“Excuse me,” Nancy said. “Could I rent a boat?”
The boy pointed to a sign that Nancy hadn’t noticed before. It posted the operating hours of the rental company: twelve o’clock to five o’clock. “We don’t open till noon, lady,” he said.
Out of the corner of her eye, Nancy could see Hastings moving farther out into the harbor.
“How much do you want for this boat?” she asked, pulling out her wallet.
The boy hesitated. Nancy could tell he was trying to figure out how much he could get.
“Here,” she said, handing him two twenty-dollar bills. “Will this cover it?”
The boy nodded happily, shouting instructions about how to use the boat. Nancy jumped in, glancing over her shoulder at Hastings’s boat, moving ever farther away. After a few false starts, she got the motor going and shot out into the harbor.
Nancy followed Hastings’s boat as discreetly as possible, trying to catch up without attracting his attention. It wasn’t too difficult, since the harbor was busy with small fishing boats and sailboats of all shapes and sizes.
Nancy could see Chappaquiddick Island, only a short distance across Edgartown Harbor. Could that be where they were heading? The ferry came churning past on its return trip from Chappaquiddick. Several people on the ferry waved happily at her, enjoying the beautiful morning. Nancy eyed the ferry’s choppy wake and fought to steer her boat across it.
Up ahead, she could see Hastings and the bearded man swing their boat around to back into the Chappaquiddick dock. Nancy ducked down, afraid Hastings might see her. She waited nervously for the shout of recognition she was sure would follow.
But there was only the sound of the gulls squawking overhead. When she next looked up, she could see Hastings climbing out onto the dock.
The bearded man revved up his motor and buzzed away from the dock again, heading back toward Edgartown. He’s probably a fisherman who makes extra money by ferrying people to Chappaquiddick, Nancy realized.
Nancy steered into the dock and quickly tied up her boat. Hopping out, she ran in the direction Hastings had gone, up the hill.
Chappaquiddick seemed completely different from the big island. It was much wilder, with no cute little stores selling bikinis and beach umbrellas. There were no seafood restaurants on the pier, and no expensive hotels lined the shore.
The sand dunes lining the shore soon gave way to a paved road that led uphill. The gulls circled overhead as Nancy saw Hastings disappear over the crest of the hill.
She jogged up the hill, hoping to close the distance between her and Hastings. At the top of the hill she spotted him again, up by a beach club on the left, heading toward a row of private homes.
